Happy New Year 2011!

Not very good light in the hallway (and it's skewed), but it'll have to do. Hope the new year turns out well anyway.

World record at the Helsinki velodrome!

I had a posting earlier on Erika Salumäe and her bikes. According to the Tunturi/Rossin 1989 catalog Erika Salumäe set a new world record at the Helsinki velodrome in the summer of 1988. The event was 1000 m time trial. I could not find any info on this anywhere else. The problem is that e.g. UCI does not list this kind of records as the 'official' distance for women is 500 m.

Erika  Salumäe still has the 500 m time trial world record from 1987 in Moscow (UCI)! In theory the 1000 m time trial world record set at the Helsinki velodrome by Erika Salumäe could also still be valid, which would be cool as hell!!

Here is Erika with her World Championship and Olympic gold medals around her neck + Rossin bike and Gipiemme disc wheels in the bag.

See some more of the Helsinki Olympic velodrome here, here, here and here.

Go fast and turn right? More Olympic cycling here and here. Seems that I still need to make the third set at some point.

Overdoing it

A few more Rossin track bikes (1989 catalog). Divide by 4 to convert prices to 2010 Euros.

More Rossin

From the cover of the 1989 catalog.

Rossin Futura CX 4

The Rossin Futura CX 4 was actually used by the Finnish national team in the late 1980's (at least according to a brochure from 1987). Wonder where those bikes are today. The price back then was 22500 Finnish Marks. That equals about 6200 Euros ($8200) today, which is not that much...

The pics are from a 1987 Tunturi brochure. Tunturi is (was) a Finnish bicycle company. Rossin road and track bikes were marketed and sold in Finland by Tunturi.

The pics didn't turn out that good, but I am too lazy to redo them.

Campagnolo bottles

Pics from a 1988 brochure. Biodynamic bottle.

Nokia - Fang. It Bites.

Fang, that would make a cool name for a mobile phone? The marketing department at Nokia apparently had much more imagination back in the 1990's than today, when they give cool names like N8 etc. for their smart phones.

Nokia used to produce all kind of products before they became the worlds biggest mobile phone company. Products like rubber boots, car tires and of course bicycle tires. These ads are from mid 1990's. The bicycle tires are still produced by Suomi tyres. I am using these.

Nokia even used the "Connecting People" slogan in the tire ads.

Kari Myyryläinen also has an earring (see above).

Ms Honey & Mr Macho

Some time ago Mario Cipollini complained about the lack of machismo in cycling. It used to be different. Below some pics from a Finnish 1989 Terässiipi (Steelwing) - Titania brochure. The marketing department have worked their asses off. I also posted some of the texts (only in Finnish). Cool, cool, so cool!

"Kun minusta tulee iso...ette arvaa ikinä! Lukekaa sitten lehdistä, unelmani kyllä toteutuvat. Teen aina mitä tahdon, milloin tahdon ja kenen kanssa huvittaa. Muotini on omani. 'Itseluottamus on menestyksen ensimmäinen salaisuus', sanoi joku viisas sata vuotta sitten.

Kehrään mielihyvästä - on pakko pitää tauko."

Makes me think about flying... Have a look at that chain (around her neck).
"Mitä tahansa voi tapahtua, kun liikun pyörällä. Eilen tuli vain leffakutsu, mutta viime viikolla päädyin grillijuhlille, vaikka olen kasvissyöjä! Kerran vei tuntematon tienpätkä keskelle piknikiä. Ja minkälaista! Tänään muutin tyyliäni - tänään kaikki on mahdollista. Jotain tapahtuu..."

OK, this weird sh*t is getting even weirder...
WTF, Michael?
"Meillä oli vuosisadan flaidis ja lopuks mutsi huusi ett painu suolle. Se ei arvannutkaan,  miten lähelle totuutta se osui. Mulla kun on tää maasturi. Ei mikään friidujen imelä höpönassu, vaan kunnon metsäpeto. Renkaissa pitoa, rungossa näköä. Yhtä lailla kulkee muuten cityviidakossakin. Brrrrm!"

Me and my Tomahawk!

It is -26C (-15F) outside. Went for a quick spin. I didn't have proper gloves and my fingers almost broke off. So I spent the evening looking through some old photos and found this.

It's me and my Tomahawk some years ago. The Tomahawk was produced by the Norwegian bicycle factory DBS in the beginning of the 70's. An icon of its time. The Tomahawk was in production for only a couple of years until it was considered too dangerous. I got the bike from my cousin in Sweden. There seems to be a facebook group demanding the Tomahawk back.
